It sure is great to know that IMAX Theater is making a comeback to the Lowcountry.

The news is hot off the presses about the upcoming grand opening near Citadel Mall. Some local folks are in a quandary wondering why the building is so small, worrying that the new IMAX might not live up to their expectations. We say…let’s give it a try, at least for the kid’s sake.

Who cares if the new IMAX isn’t as grand as another one you’ve visited in the past, as long as it will open up some local jobs and employment? Think about it: Specialty technicians will be needed to run the equipment, concession vendors and ticket takers, food service providers, cleaning and janitorial staff, game-room attendees, games and gaming suppliers, and more. That’s great!

The October 2nd, 2009 grand opening will feature $1.00 admissions and concessions.
“Bryan Smith, Regional Vice-President, announced that the new Citadel Mall IMAX Stadium 16 will open on Friday, October 2, 2009 for a 5 day charity event with profits going to the local Lowcountry March of Dimes.

SC Newspapers Go Online: The S.C. Digital Newspaper Project

June 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Why is this so important for Charleston? The grant was given to try to preserve as much of our state’s history as possible. By scanning and preserving decades of “old” print news, it will make history come alive.

“The resulting online archive will reflect major artistic, literary, religious, ethnic, cultural, economic, and political events in South Carolina and surrounding states.”

clipped from www.sc.edu

Project to digitize 60 years of S.C. newspapers

Kate Boyd and Craig Keeney

Digital librarians Kate Boyd and Craig Keeney will lead efforts to digitize select S.C. newspapers from 1860 to 1922.
A rich but dusty archive of South Carolina history — newspapers published throughout the state from 1860 to 1922 — will become Web accessible through the S.C. Digital Newspaper Project, an initiative of University Libraries.
The project, funded with a two-year $350,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), will scan, enhance, and deliver to the Library of Congress an estimated 100,000 pages of selected S.C. newspaper titles. The resulting online archive will reflect major artistic, literary, religious, ethnic, cultural, economic, and political events in South Carolina and surrounding states.
“I hope that this next step towards even more accessibility to South Carolina newspapers will capture people’s interest from around the world in South Carolina and American history.
